Privateer Crew's Watch List
November 24, 2022
In 1902, Georges Méliès’ “Le Voyage dans la Lune” became the first science fiction film ever made. Since then, hundreds of space related films and television shows have been produced – each inspiring different generations of the space industry sector in their own ways.
What sci-fi creations have inspired the team at Privateer? We asked some of the crew.
Interstellar (2014)
Audrey MacDonell, Mechanical Engineer:
The movie to me was super captivating and touched on some very important themes. I especially thought it was amazing how they were able to illustrate time and relativity. At its core, the movie underscores the need for environmental action by showing what could happen if we continue to live unsustainable lifestyles.
Marco Rossi, Satellite Design and Production Manager:
Two words: theoretical physics.
Armageddon (1998)
Brooke Bento, Chief of Staff & Chief People Officer
I love Armeageddon, because it's about how us space peeps are going to save the world!
Also, let’s not forget this classic:
Haileigh DeVries, Office Manager:
Space + Romance + Thrill = The Perfect Movie
Arrival (2016)
Shaantam Chawla, Flight Software Engineer:
“This is a way to get us to work together for once.”
That sums it up – Arrival is an alien movie that's not about aliens. It's about world unity – countries have to talk to each other to decode the aliens' language and intentions. Promoting global cooperation is one of the aliens' greatest gifts. I love Arrival because of its peaceful message. We won't be a spacefaring human race until we first learn to work together, here on Earth.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Joel Walsh, Software Engineer:
This movie was the first time I had ever seen a depiction of artificial intelligence. It's a movie I have watched and rewatched at several different points in my life. Somehow I always manage to take something new from it each time.
The Expanse (2015-2022)
Matthew Lugo, Aerospace Engineer:
I love the show for a few different reasons. Gravitational-assist maneuvers for sport, optimism expressed as the conservation of ∆v (Delta-V), an amazing story with captivating characters… What’s not to love?
